Roaches as Composters?

Thu, 11/06/2009 - 12:58pm
Hi Guys,
I'm new and appear to be, being logged out whenever I try and access "Miscellaneous" and other titles, which is where I thought this might best be placed, but oh well, here goes...

I've read that Coackroaches eat anything, they even need some meat, so I was wondering, could a colony of roaches be used as a super fast composter for the Kitchen scraps instead of the Worms? With worms you cannot give them any meat (or processed) products, but with roaches I believe you can.
The advantage with worms is that you get good compost from them, with roaches you don't get this, but instead you get the actual roach for fish / frog food.

What do you think, is it feasible, do any of you guys use your roaches as a form of composters?

Jon.

The Roach Ranch *Your Blaptica Dubia HQ*

Thu, 23/04/2009 - 6:27pm
The Roach Ranch is up and running. Right now all we deal in are Blaptica Dubia. Hopefully we'll be expanding ASAP. Due to all the problems w/ the USPS api apps we just focused on getting the site up and operational. So we still have to complete site design. But all the info is up for you.

www.theroachranch.com

Right now Shipping and terms are on the BOTTOM of all the pages so please read them before ordering.

Our online store is fully functional and we except every credit card out there as well as debit cards. We use USAEPAY so it's nice and secure.

Also we cover 1/2 the shipping costs and add a free 20% overcount on all orders.

Like I said we still have work to do on the site and one of the things that we forgot was contact info... So if you have ANY questions feel free to PM me here on the boards or shoot me an e-mail at Ihaggerty@theroachranch.com

searching for information about Nocticolidae

Sat, 18/04/2009 - 2:24pm
Hello, this is Mark. I am curious to know if members of the cockroach family Nocticolidae which are mainly troglodytic produce hardened ootheca like most roaches or are they encased in a frothy secretion like mantis ootheca? I have read some interesting articles regarding the symbiotic bacteria Blattabacterium in which all roach families except Nocticolidae possess. Mantises lack these bacteria as well. Some researchers have suggested that the Nocticolidae may be more closely related to mantises that to roaches. Unfortunately, I cannot find much info about these unusual Blattodeans. Can anyone help?

Thanks, Mark

Dubia not breeding

Mon, 13/04/2009 - 1:52pm
I've been raising dubia for about 3 years now. They've never bred as well for me as they do for other people but the colony produces more than I need so it's never been a concern. What I have been doing is 3-4 times a year I separate the nymphs out and after my adults are about a year old I start a new colony. When they mature they start breeding and I retire my old adults. This time around my new colony isn't producing any babies. I have about 25 females and a number of males. They've been mature since Christmas, so it's been nearly 4 months and I still don't have one baby. I've seen females with oothecas hanging out but it looks like they are being eaten by the other roaches while it's exposed. I'm keeping them the same temps and food as my "retired" adults that are still producing quite well. Temps are in the low to mid 80F. They're eating good quality dog food and fish flake with constant supply of washed apples. I've been leaving them alone.
Any input would be appreciated.
